Sparkling Blood Orange and Pomegranate Punch is a stellar addition to a holiday gathering. Perfect from Fall through the New Year, it’s easy and delicious.
I wanted to make a cocktail specific for Halloween even though I’m not the biggest fan of the holiday (really, is it even a holiday?). It’s probably because I just can not stand the color orange as much as anything but for the last several years, without little kids around to dress up, it just doesn’t hold much charm for me. Oh, I’ve always put the requisite decorations in front of the house and despite the occasional yearning to do so, I’ve never bailed on the kids on my street. I put on my witch costume (no jokes from the peanut gallery) and greet every single one of the revelers with a basket of the required treats.
Not this year. This year I’m homeless. Not that I’m living on the street but I’m not in my own home and for the first time I won’t have to participate. I should be grateful right? So why am I going to offer to answer the door for my neighbors so that they can both walk from house to house with their little girl? I remember those little girls of mine and how excited they always were; it’s when they’re little that’s it’s the most fun so I’ll do candy duty for them so they can both enjoy the experience with Lena; she is a character and I would sure want to be there if I were her mom or dad.
I can’t help but think about all those years of costumes I made. I think there is a purple satin unicorn still packed away somewhere but memories flood back of watermelons and strawberries, said unicorn, bunny rabbits and Betsy Ross. We might have done a witch or ghost but I was more about less scary beings; I’m not too keen on the scary stuff. Ask my friend Karen who I went to see Carrie with. My hand spent a fair amount of time shielding my eyes (though seriously the previews were scarier than the movie!).
Still I enjoy having a cocktail to look forward to and why not one like this Sparkling Blood Orange and Pomegranate Punch that is representative of the season. Last year it was this delicious Caramel Apple Cider Cocktail and this year, perhaps inspired by the aforementioned movie, I decided that something blood red needed to be involved. What better than blood oranges? Truth be told it’s a bit ahead of blood orange season but I can see this gorgeous punch throughout the upcoming holidays; it really is a beautiful color and a great refreshing drink. Part of the sparkling soda is used to make ice cubes to keep the drink cold; I have this cool little mini ice cube tray but regular will work fine too; it’s a great idea to keep the drink cold without diluting the best part. The rum. 🙂
I actually used a bit less rum than the recipe calls for when making this for the group it was served to; so adjust up or down for your own personal tastes.
Have a safe and fun Halloween. BOO!!
