Talk about a tough assignment. Would I be willing to try the new PHILADELPHIA INDULGENCE; a chocolate spread from Kraft that has married cream cheese with either dark, milk or white chocolate? My first thoughts went to a dessert I’ve loved forever which layers a cookie crust with chocolate pudding and a whipped cream cheese layer. I love how the tang of the cheese blends with the chocolate to make for a less sweet finish and I was hoping for the same with this product and it did not disappoint.
I decided to do one recipe with each product but I was only able to find the milk chocolate and white chocolate tubs at the grocery; the demand is already so great that the dark chocolate was out of stock. The truth is I feel like a confession is necessary…this was meant to be. I can not deny I’m a milk chocoholic through and through!!
The first job I ever had (and that was a FEW years ago) was with a large company in a suburb of St. Louis. They had a full cafeteria for employees and coffee break for most meant bagels with cream cheese. That quickly became a bit too mundane for my palate; to this day I love matching bagels with unique variations of cream cheese and dollops of jam. In keeping with one of my special breakfast traditions I decided to try the white chocolate on a toasted bagel paired with a gorgeous raspberry and cointreau jam. This spoke perfectly of the name…it was most definitely an indulgence! The sweeter finish of the white chocolate spread paired perfectly with a softly tart jam. A simple but perfectly special breakfast.
I wanted to do something else that I could serve as an appetizer and for this choice my patriotism is showing. I hold these truths to be self evident. Milk chocolate. Dates, Spicy Brown Sugar Cured Bacon. Add those together and you have amazing. I could not wait to try this combination. A small spoonful of PHILADELPHIA MILK CHOCOLATE INDULGENCE was stuffed inside a date which was then wrapped in a slice of bacon and broiled. I know this will most likely be unfair to mention but that bacon is my home cured so adding a brown sugar, paprika and red pepper cured bacon was the perfect foil to the sweetness of the dates and the milk chocolate spread. This was one of those sweet, salty, crispy, chewy delights that were gone way too soon.
Even though I work long hours I still love having friends over to my home to socialize. With the warmer weather on its way I’m so looking forward to my favorite thing which includes a patio bedecked with twinkle lights, the soft gurgle of my little pond in the distance soothing my soul while I share an adult beverage and some great appetizers with good friends. There is definitely a place in my kitchen and my schedule for convenience and a little indulgence. What about you…what is your favorite indulgence?
- 8 slices Bacon
- 16 Medjool or other large dates
- 4-6 oz Kraft Philadelphia Milk Chocolate Indulgence Spread
- Preheat broiler or grill
- Cut strips of bacon in half
- Pit dates if necessary; slit open one side with small knife and remove seed
- Fill date with cream cheese spread; approximately 1/2 tsp per date
- Wrap one piece of bacon around each date; adhering with toothpick
- Broil or grill on high until bacon is crisp, approximately 1 minute per side
- Serve immediately
