Blueberry Mojito

I wanted my daughter to make this cocktail for a baby shower she is co-hosting this weekend. She wanted something really, really blue and truth is I could not guarantee this would be so she’s going the route of a cocktail with Blue Curacao. She had better make something very tasty with that neon blue stuff because while this might not be the perfect color…boy oh boy was it good.

I’ve made Blueberry Mojitos before and once the berries actually had a blue tone to them but the truth is that most often those blue berries will make purple juice. Go figure. I’m not a big fan of eating anything blue because it’s most often artificially colored; I would have considered making these bluer for her needs but for Friday Cocktail; I’m OK with this hue; after all purple is actually my favorite color!


I took this photo on Emily’s small patio that is connected to the room I use for photography. That door to the patio is typically closed and locked so it was lucky I opened it the other day to get some air and realized what a pretty space it would be for relaxing with a cocktail. Emily has for years tried growing some plants in this space without success; this year she inherited some larger pots of mine when I moved and bought another of her own and has done a beautiful job of creating a balcony garden. Flowers accent tomatoes, basil, rosemary and mint and my girl has finally discovered her green thumb…they are all just beautiful.

cruzan-key-lime-rumI loved this cocktail; after making a Raspberry Mojito a few weeks ago with vodka I was ready to return to a more classic combination with rum and I remembered that I had some Cruzan Key Lime Rum in my liquor cabinet…how perfect right? I’m not a big fan of some of the flavored vodkas and rums on the market but the combination of rum and lime are meant to be. We’ve been enjoying Cuba Libres lately and this has been such a great addition to that classic cocktail so I just knew it would work well with this Blueberry Mojito. Cruzan® Key Lime Rum adds the sweet and tangy taste of key lime to its blend of rum, creating a spirit with a terrific citrus flavor that is perfectly combined with a light bodied finish. I’ve really enjoyed the Cruzan rums I’ve tried; they are an excellent product without a price tag to scare you away!

Need a Mocktail? For those of you who need to restrict your alcohol intake, Amber with Bluebonnets and Brownies made this Virgin Mojito; it would be great as is or mixed with some blueberry puree for a version of this cocktail.

I’m thinking I need to experiment with the full gamut of summer fruits in mojitos; wondering now if I can still find some cherries…you might just see that next!

Blueberry Mojito
Prep time
Total time
Serves: One Serving
  • ¼ cup blueberries
  • 2-3 Tbsp simple syrup (mix equal amounts of water and sugar and bring to a boil; cook just until the sugar is melted and cool)
  • 2 ounces rum
  • 2 slices lime
  • 4-6 mint leaves
  • Blueberries, lime slice and mint for garnish
  1. Put blueberries and simple syrup into a blender and mix until all solids are liquified.
  2. Pour into a cocktail shaker and add rum. Fill shaker with ice and shake vigorously until shaker is ice cold.
  3. Put lime and mint into the bottom of a glass and muddle (use a muddler or a large spoon); crushing to release the oils and juices.
  4. Fill the glass with ice, pour the berry and rum mixture into the glass and stir well.
  5. Top with chilled club soda or sparkling water, stir and garnish with blueberries, lime and mint leaf.

      My daughter planted mint in a pot on her patio Elizabeth and it did great; she’s has tried and tried for several years to get plants to grow and, ahem, finally listened to her mama. Her pots were WAY too little and everything dried out before the end of the day. I gave her a couple of big pots when I moved and she bought another herself and her garden is amazing! Actually it’s what’s in the background of that mojito. Tomatoes, basil, mint, rosemary, thyme and some annuals thrown in for color. If you want to plant mint in the ground; dig out a big hole, plant your mint in a 5 gallon paint bucket and submerge the bucket. That will keep it from spreading…worked in my garden for 20+ years.

      You’ll love this cocktail; it was so refreshing and the blueberry is a great addition.

      She has struggled to get something going for years…the answer was simply much larger pots. It’s a forest out there and I love it!

    Aside from BLUE corn, I am here to tell you that when we lived near the Bay of Quinte (eastern Ontario, Canada) for about one week in July every year, we ran to get as many blue raspberries as the freezer would hold –pies, jam, and as many fresh berries that we could eat in that week. The berries were really BLUE and tasted quite unlike any I have seen or tasted before or since — an intense, wine-like flavour.
    By the way, this blueberry cocktail looks superb!

      I did some research before I wrote this article and discovered that there is a raspberry plant called, Rubus leucodermis, also referred to as “blue raspberry”, “black raspberry”, “whitebark raspberry” or “blackcap”. This species of raspberry plant is native to western North America from B.C. in Canada south to California, New Mexico and Mexico in the United States. This species of plant is closely related to the eastern North American variety of black raspberry called Rubus occidentalis and my research indicated that the actual color of the whitebark raspberry is dark purple. If you indeed have really true blue raspberries up your way I would love to see them! I had forgotten about blue corn…which is pretty dumb since I just love blue corn tortillas. Still. blue is very much a rarity even with those examples; I’m still sure I’ll never go too crazy over a blue food or drink! :)

      Uh oh…my daughter wants me to feature the cocktail she is making next week. I’ll give it a try but I’m pretty sure I’ll remain with one foot firmly planted in the ‘if it’s blue it not meant to be consumed’ camp! That straw is actually a glass straw with blue glass drips; I LOVE them. I have plain ones and ones for martinis too…yes, I went a bit nuts! Here’s where I got them:

      That’s why she wanted a blue drink; it’s actually a whale/tropical theme for a baby boy. Her friend has been waiting for years to hear the words, ‘We’ve found a baby for you’ so we’re all pretty excited.

      Do give Cruzan a try; I’ve been very impressed with the ones I’ve tried. The blueberries were so good…I mean now I really want to try cherries and even a different citrus…oh what I would give for a blood orange mojito!

    Loving your Blueberry Mojito cocktail, B! And, I need to pick up some Cruzan. Like you, I’m all about all-natural and detest artificially flavored spirits. All of those flavored vodkas kill me. They have an off taste, chemical-like. Cute stirrer/straw with the “blueberries”, too. Pretty photography in general out on the balcony!
